Neptune Phinisi
Four things to settle before the first flight
Updated 4 November 2026
First time in Indonesia before a Neptune voyage: confirm visa rules on the official immigration site before you book flights, fly into Komodo Airport the day before sailing, carry some cash for Labuan Bajo, and pack sunscreen, drinking water and a small first-aid pouch.
Visas and entry rules: confirm before booking flights
Entry rules depend on your passport, and they change. Some nationalities enter visa-free for a short stay, many use a visa on arrival or an e-visa, and others must apply before they fly. The fee, the length of stay and the arrival card have all moved in recent years.
So this page states no fee and no promise. Check the official immigration site for your nationality on the day you book flights, and again two weeks before you fly. Be careful with third-party sites that charge extra to do what the official portal does for the visa fee alone.
Keep the passport in good order. Check its validity against the rules for your visa category, and look for blank pages. Carry proof of onward travel, since an airline can ask for it at check-in.
The table below sets out the points we confirmed and how recently. Treat any line marked as unconfirmed as a prompt to check, never as an answer.
| Visa on Arrival (VoA) | Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. |
|---|---|
| e-VoA | The same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days. |
| VoA / e-VoA price | IDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly. |
| Length of stay | 30 days from the day you arrive, single entry |
| Extension | Once, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end. |
| Visa-free entry | 30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. |
| Passport | Valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages |
| Onward ticket | Proof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA |
| All Indonesia arrival card | Free and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration. |
| Arriving in Labuan Bajo | Most visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight |
| Bali tourist levy | IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee. |

From the airport gate to Flores
Flores is a separate island from Bali and from Lombok, and no road or rail connects them. You fly. Most guests reach Labuan Bajo through Bali or Jakarta and land at Komodo Airport, which is 7 to 10 minutes by car from the harbour.
Book the flight so that you arrive the day before sailing. The reason is practical and not cautious for its own sake: a flight in the region can be delayed or cancelled, and a boat leaves at 10:00 whether or not your plane has landed.
Our separate guide to reaching Labuan Bajo from Bali, Jakarta or Lombok works through the choices and the timings, and the hotels page explains where to sleep. Here the point is smaller. Plan the flight first, because everything else on the trip hangs from it.
| Airport | Komodo International Airport, code LBJ |
|---|---|
| Usual connections | Bali (DPS), Jakarta (CGK) or Surabaya (SUB); Lombok and Kupang are smaller feeders |
| Flight time to Labuan Bajo | From Bali about 1 h 10 min to 1 h 20 min; from Surabaya about 1 h 30 min; from Jakarta 2 h 30 min to 3 h; from Lombok about 1 h |
| Airlines | Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia from Bali and Jakarta; Super Air Jet from Surabaya; Wings Air on the shorter island routes. Schedules change, so check before you book. |
| Airport to the harbour | 2 to 3 km, about 10 minutes by car |

Cash, cards and ATMs in Labuan Bajo
The currency is the Indonesian rupiah, and our quotes are in rupiah. Hotels, charters and some restaurants take cards, sometimes with a surcharge. Small shops, markets and taxis expect cash or QRIS, the local QR payment.
Cash machines stand along the main road near the harbour and at the airport arrivals. Nothing of the kind exists inside the park or on the islands, so draw what you need in Labuan Bajo before you board. Withdrawal limits per transaction are modest, and your own bank can add a fee.
On the boat, drinks and tips are the usual cash items. Alcohol is excluded from the fare, and tips for the crew are optional and pooled at the end of the voyage. Carry small notes in rupiah, since change is hard to find at sea.
Payment for the voyage itself follows the channels on the booking page, with the fee named before you pay.
| Currency | Indonesian rupiah (IDR); about IDR 16,000 to 16,500 to the US dollar and IDR 17,500 to 18,000 to the euro in mid-2026 |
|---|---|
| ATMs | BCA, Mandiri, BNI and BRI on Jl. Soekarno-Hatta near the harbour and at airport arrivals; none in the national park or on the islands. Take cash before you board. |
| ATM limits | IDR 1,250,000 to 3,000,000 per withdrawal; a local fee of about IDR 25,000 to 50,000, plus your own bank's charges |
| Cards or cash | Cards work at hotels, dive centres, boat companies and larger restaurants, often with a surcharge of 2 to 4 per cent. Small eateries, markets, taxis and small shops take cash. |
| Tipping | Appreciated, never compulsory. In restaurants 5 to 10 per cent when no service charge is added; for a boat crew, IDR 50,000 to 100,000 per guest per day is a common range. |

Sunscreen, drinking water and a small first-aid pouch
The sun is the first health matter. The islands have little shade, and the open deck has less. Bring sunscreen, a hat with a brim, sunglasses and a light long-sleeved shirt. Mineral sunscreen is kinder to the reef at Pink Beach and Taka Makassar.
Do not drink tap water in Indonesia. Use sealed bottled or filtered water, and ask us what is supplied aboard. Carry your own bottle to the treks: 1.5 litres a person is a sensible amount for Padar.
Pack a small pouch with plasters, antiseptic, a blister dressing, tablets for stomach upsets, and any prescription medicine in its original packaging. Pharmacies in Labuan Bajo have a limited choice, and none exist on the islands. Travel insurance with medical cover is recommended and not included in the fare.
A motion remedy is worth taking on day one. Choose one from your own pharmacy at home, ask a pharmacist, and try it before the voyage rather than during it.
| Insurance | Travel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive |
|---|---|
| Private hospital | Siloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, Jl. Gabriel Gampur, +62 385 2440 666; it has a hyperbaric chamber |
| Public hospital | RSUD Komodo, Labuan Bajo, with an emergency unit; no hyperbaric chamber |
| Pharmacies | Available in town with a limited range; bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home |
| Emergency numbers | 112 general; 118 or 119 medical; 110 police; 115 search and rescue |
| Health risks | Dengue, chikungunya and malaria are present, so protect yourself against mosquito bites. Rabies exists in dogs and monkeys: seek care at once after a bite. |

FAQ
Which visa does a first-time visitor need, and what does it cost?
It depends on your passport. Many visitors use a visa on arrival, an e-visa or a visa obtained before travel, and a few nationalities enter visa-free for a short stay. We state no fee because fees and rules change. Check the official immigration site for your nationality before you book flights.
Can I pay by card in Labuan Bajo, and where are the cash machines?
Hotels, charters and some restaurants take cards, sometimes with a surcharge, while small shops and taxis want cash or QRIS. Cash machines stand near the harbour and at the airport arrivals, and none stand inside the park or on the islands. Draw rupiah in town before you board.
Is tap water safe, and what health items should I pack?
Do not drink tap water in Indonesia; use sealed bottled or filtered water. Pack sunscreen, a hat, plasters, antiseptic, stomach tablets and any prescription medicine in its original box. Pharmacies in Labuan Bajo have limited stock, and travel insurance with medical cover is recommended, not included.
